A Sealy Mattress is from one of the biggest manufacturers of mattresses in the world – and they have been making quality mattresses for many years. The main man behind Sealy, without whom all this would ever have been possible, is Daniel Haynes. Way back in 1881, Daniel Haynes used to make cotton mattresses for people, the majority of his customers being his own friends. After 8 years, that is, in 1889, he devised a method, which could be used to compress cotton, for making mattresses.
He patented this invention, and his mattress sales were higher than ever. Gradually, his sales reached dizzying heights, and he eventually sold off his patented rights to big manufacturers. After this, in 1906, Earl Edwards, who happened to be a successful advertising executive, purchased all the rights and patents, centering on Haynes mattresses, and opened his own manufacturing company, which he named Sealy. He gained all the knowledge that he could, from Haynes, and took Sealy mattresses to a national level, and eventually, introduced it to the global scenario, and was met with immense success. But things were not all easy and simple for Edwards. He by and by opened 28 plants, and used the licensing-expansion technique to boost Sealy. This licensing technique had been used by Coca-Cola in its earlier stages. But even after this, things were not all that great for Sealy.
The Great Depression hit the mattress industry hard and brutally, and Sealy missed bankruptcy by inches, so to speak. Later on, the company was again acquired by a group of Sealys executives, in 1997, and continued to be run as a private firm, till 2006. But now, Sealy is again one of the biggest manufacturers of mattresses, along with the likes of Simmons mattresses, Kingsdown mattresses etc, and makes some of the best and finest mattresses for us. There are many different varieties of mattresses, and Sealy never lets us down.
